Audience Reports

Use Empirical Data to Inform Your Game Production & Marketing Decisions

Whether you have an existing game title/franchise or have a new game in development, we can provide data-driven insights about your audience.

A Quick Note on The Science and Data Behind Our Reports

Our Gamer Motivation Model

We used established psychometric methods and data from over 220,000 gamers to develop an empirical model of gamer motivations. Here’s all that data distilled into a single table.

Prioritize Game Development with our Game Audience Reports

The chart shows the percentile rank of this audience across the 12 gaming motivations in our model. A percentile of 50% is perfectly average. Thus, the audience in the example chart cares the most about Fantasy and Design, and the least about Excitement and Destruction.

To get a better sense of the exact information provided in each game audience report, see this example Audience Report.

Compare profiles against the genre benchmark or slice the profiles by gender, age, region, or platform. Contact us to learn more about custom audience reports.

Game Audience Reports

Prioritize game development by identifying the most and least important gaming motivations of a specific game/franchise, genre, or demographic segment.

  • Game audience reports contain the demographic and motivation profiles for specific game titles or game franchises.
  • Motivation profiles quantify the most and least important motivations for a given game audience (across the 12 motivations in our model).
  • Audience reports also provide a ranked list of other games popular within each game audience, highlighting closely related games (even if they are in a different genre).

Identify Opportunities with Game Space Mapping

Game Space Mapping

Visualize game clusters, competitors, and opportunities in a game genre space.

  • Given a few seed games of interest, we can identify the most closely related games based on our audience data.
  • We can statistically model the primary motivation dimensions of this audience and generate a map of this game neighborhood.
  • Use these maps to explore the competitive landscape, pinpoint a new game concept, identify player acquisition opportunities, or hidden linkages to other genres.

With 2 axes and 12 motivations, there are 66 possible combinations–too many to manually go through. Ideally, we’d like axes that surface the main motivational differences within a game space. This is possible by using statistical methods to identify the primary motivation axes within the particular audience space to create a condensed visualization.

The axes combine highly correlated motivations (whether these are positive or negative correlations) into a single dimension (i.e., each axis). For example, games on the left have audiences that score high on Power and low on Story, while games on the right have audiences that score high on Story and low on Power.

Here’s a redacted report delivered to an actual client that focuses on games in the Fighting genre. In these reports, we identify trends/clusters that surface in the analysis and also provide demographic overlays to show trends in genre, age, gamer type, and gaming frequency.

Identify Distinct Player Types Within Your Audience

Using our data set, we can estimate the frequency of each segment in your target audience. Thus, our customer segment reports provide not only the combinations of motivations and demographics that do together, but also their relative frequency in your audience.
  • An executive summary slide of all the player segments.
  • A descriptive sketch of each segment.
  • The demographic profile of each segment (including gender percentages, median age, casual/core/hardcore gamer type, and number of days per week with at least 30 minutes of gaming).
  • The motivation profile of each segment (i.e., percentile ranks on each of the 12 motivations in our model).
  • A ranked list of the games that are disproportionately popular in each segment, and a similar ranked list of games that are disproportionately unpopular.
  • Explore a sample report.

Yes. We can use our validated motivation inventory to profile your existing gamers using a non-branded, white-labeled survey. We can then conduct the segment analysis on your audience data directly. Unique player IDs can be embedded in the survey link to allow later linkage with server-side KPIs. This would allow us for example to provide not only the typical player segments, but how the segments vary in terms of retention or monetization for example.

Player Segment Analysis

Identify your player segments and target them with specific features and messaging.

  • Game audiences are not homogenous, and may be composed of several distinct underlying segments.
  • We use cluster analysis on our audience data to identify the distinct segments within a game title/franchise/genre.
  • The report provides the demographic and motivation profile of each segment.
  • Understanding how motivations group together enables targeting those segments with specific combinations of game mechanics, monetization options, and acquisition messaging.
